Joseph Choma and Maya Hayuk

Joseph Choma is the Founder of the Design Topology Lab and an Associate Professor of Architecture at Clemson University, where he directs the Master of Science in Architecture program. He is the author of three books: Morphing: A Guide to Mathematical Transformations for Architects and Designers (Laurence King Publishing, 2015), Études for Architects (Routledge, 2018), and The Philosophy of Dumbness (ORO Editions, 2020). As a researcher, his interests lie at the intersection of mathematics, folding, structure and materials. He has received awards from both the American Institute of Architects and the American Composites Manufacturers Association. His recent material explorations have been noted by CompositesWorld Magazine as “spearheading research into the use of foldable composites." In particular, he is the inventor of ‘Foldable Composite Structures’—U.S. Patent Number 10,994,468. In 2018, he was a keynote speaker at the Future of Architecture and Building Biennale in Mumbai, India. Recently, he was selected for the 2019-20 NCCR Digital Fabrication Researcher in Residence at the ETH Zürich. He completed graduate studies in design and computation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Currently he is completing a PhD in Architecture at the University of Cambridge, UK where he is a Cambridge International Scholar.

Maya Hayuk (b.1969) is a Ukrainian-American artist best known for her massively-scaled site-specific artworks seen around the world. Her iconic, geometric, brightly woven style is instantly recognizable and challenges the norm of narrative work seen in today’s onslaught of outdoor murals. Hayuk’s work has been the subject of one person exhibitions and commissions at venues including The Albright-Knox Museum (2021), FRAC Museum Dunkerque, FR (2019), The Ukrainian Museum (2017), The Bowery Wall, NY (2014), The Hammer Museum, LA (2013), The Museum Of Contemporary Canadian Art, Toronto, Canada (2013) and Bonnefanten Museum, Maastricht, The Netherlands (2012). Hayuk is represented in numerous public and private collections internationally including FRAC Museum (FR), The Ukrainian Museum (US), The Millennium Iconoclast Museum of Art (Brussels, Belgium), The Embassy of the United States of America (Sanaa, Yemen), The Embassy of the United States of America Residence (Costa Rica), MOCA Jacksonville (FL), The Ullens Foundation (Brussels, Belgium), The Dean Collection (US) and Wayne Coyne (Flaming Lips).

Hayuk earned a BFA in Interrelated Media (SIM) at Massachusetts College of Art and has studied at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Virginia Commonwealth University, Ontario College of Art and Design and The University of Odessa, Ukraine. Hayuk has been a guest speaker/ faculty member at Illinois State University, The Ox Bow School of Art, Virginia Commonwealth University, The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Tyler School of Art at Temple University. She has been the recipient of several fellowships including the Clocktower Residency/ Andy Warhol Foundation and The Lighthouse Works on Fishers Island, NY. In 2018, Hayuk gave a TEDx Talk from The Center of Art and Design (CAD) in Brussels, Belgium, which recounts the arc of her developing career. Hayuk maintains an independent studio practice in Brooklyn, NY and is represented by A.L.I.C.E. Gallery, Brussels, Belgium and GROWROOM//SHOWROOM, New York, US.
